- Direct flights are currently operated by Loganair Kirkwall from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness airports and flight durations to Kirkwall Airport from these airports are one hour or less.
- From April 2023 a new route will be operating connecting Kirkwall Airport to London City Airport.

There are three ferry routes to reach Orkney Mainland which transport passengers and vehicles:
- Thurso/Scrabster to Stromness which takes 90 minutes is operated by Northlink Ferries
- Aberdeen to Kirkwall which takes approximately 6.5 hours also operated by Northlink
- Gills Bay to St Margarets Hope takes 60 minutes and is operated by Pentland Ferries
